Our November 2025 stay in Rovaniemi began at about −22°C and ended above freezing. Packing for that range means bringing layers you can adjust as the weather and your activity change.
The layering advice below follows Visit Rovaniemi’s recommendations. Adapt it to the day you are planning. Standing still for the aurora is colder than walking through the Village. Wet slush near freezing creates a different problem from dry, deep cold.
The basic layering system
Visit Rovaniemi recommends long thermal base layers, wool or fleece in the middle and a close-woven outer layer. Warm socks need roomy, thick-soled boots; squeezing extra socks into a tight boot can make feet colder. Cover the ears and neck, and favour mittens or layered gloves for the hands.
Even with a rental, bring the layers that touch your skin: thermals, socks and a hat. A hired set may include an insulated jacket or overall, trousers, mittens and boots, but there is no universal package.
When renting earns the luggage space
For a short trip, rental makes sense if you do not own serious winter boots or insulated outerwear. It can also be cheaper and easier than filling a flight bag with equipment you will not use at home. Rovaniemi suppliers offer adult and children’s sets for periods ranging from a day to several weeks, with different rules for delivery and size changes.
Ask the supplier:
- Is the set outerwear only, or does it include boots, mittens and neck protection?
- Can sizes be changed after fitting?
- Is hotel delivery included?
- When must wet or damaged items be reported?
- Does your safari already supply equivalent clothing for that activity?
Check the tour bookings before renting a second complete outfit. Many safaris already supply outer clothing for the activity, and wearing two bulky systems may be less comfortable than adding the right base and mid layers.
For a child, I would keep one dry set in reserve rather than using every glove and sock on the first day. Dry boots before the next outdoor block, and add insulation for long stationary waits instead of dressing only for the walk there.
