On 25 November 2025, Rovaniemi looked locked into winter. Four nights later the temperature was above freezing and snow was vanishing from some of the city surfaces we used. If one short trip can contain both scenes, a label such as “usually snowy” needs some humility.
The month is still useful for choosing between Christmas darkness and brighter spring snow. For the actual suitcase, use a forecast and webcam. Visit Rovaniemi’s seasonal ranges are broad guidance; Finnish Meteorological Institute normals describe climate, not next Tuesday.

Visit Rovaniemi says permanent snow usually arrives in late November, although it can settle earlier or wait until around December. FMI’s 1991–2020 statistics show a long Lapland snow season, with depth generally peaking around March or early April. Neither source can guarantee a white street for a particular late-November booking.
The numbers behind our November swing
FMI observations corroborate the temperature swing: Rovaniemi railway station recorded a −22.2°C daily minimum on 25 November and a +4.3°C maximum on 29 November. Nearby Apukka recorded −25.7°C and +4.1°C on those dates. Station snow did not vanish region-wide: Apukka reported 22 cm then 19 cm; the airport reported 17 cm then 16 cm, before both fell sharply on 30 November.
The station measurements explain why both our photographs can be true. Snow remained across the region while the places we walked in town were deteriorating quickly. A recorded depth at the airport does not promise good sledding beside your hotel.
Choosing a month
November is a gamble worth taking only with a low-snow backup. December brings the full Christmas atmosphere, very short days and high demand. January favours deep-winter travellers who can live with limited light. For a less punishing balance, I would look first at February or March. April may retain plenty of snow, but some winter products are winding down and the aurora needs later, shorter darkness.
