Choose self-driving if you have a suitable car, are comfortable on winter roads and want to decide when to leave and return. Choose a guided tour if you want someone else to handle the driving and help find suitable viewing conditions.

Neither choice guarantees the Northern Lights. Darkness, aurora activity and a clear local viewing direction still need to coincide. Visit Rovaniemi's aurora guidance explains the conditions; FMI's forecast helps with the local weather.

What self-driving gives you

We already had a car and preferred independent travel. We could choose when to go out and when to stop waiting. The disadvantage was timing: the brightest display began while we were still on the road.

Our four-night self-drive account covers the two sightings, phone photographs and alerts that did not produce a visible display. Choose a lawful viewing spot during daylight, checking parking, public access and somewhere to warm up.

What to ask a tour operator

A guide removes the winter driving and may be better placed to interpret local cloud or travel farther for a clear patch. Before comparing prices, ask:

  • How far can the group travel, and is there a fixed return time?
  • What happens if the sky is cloudy: cancellation, rerouting, rebooking or no refund?
  • How large is the group, and how much time goes on pickups?
  • Are thermal clothing, hot drinks and hotel transfers included?
  • Does photography mean help with your camera, or photographs you receive afterwards?

I would skip a product that presents a sighting as certain. A long chase may also be a poor fit for a tired child, regardless of how much is included.

Decide as a group

Be honest about who wants to drive, how long everyone wants to wait and what happens if the sky stays covered. Keep daytime plans worth travelling for, and treat the aurora as a possible addition. We went out on four nights and saw it on one evening; that is a more realistic basis for our advice than the brightest photograph alone.
