Put three points on a map before choosing transport: your accommodation, Santa Claus Village and the meeting point for every paid tour. Rovaniemi’s centre is easy to walk around; the airport, Village and many activity bases sit outside it. A route that works at noon may be useless after the last bus.

We had our own car in November 2025. We did not use the airport bus, local buses, taxis, rental cars or tour transfers, so those details come from current official information rather than our trip.

Airport to city

Visit Rovaniemi currently lists the seasonal Santa Claus Bus and Airport Express between the airport and city. When they are not running, its suggested alternative is a taxi. The official transport page is the place to start, followed by the operator’s timetable on the day of travel.

For a family, add up every bus ticket before assuming it beats a taxi. Then include the walk from the city stop and ask whether a suitable child seat is available.

City to Santa Claus Village

Local bus 8 links the city and Santa Claus Village. When we checked, the published timetable covered 12 August 2026 to 6 June 2027, with frequency changing by day and season. A separate Santa’s Express service was also listed. Linkkari carries the current local routes, fares and disruption notices.

Check the last ride home before paying for a timed activity. Village businesses set their own opening hours, and a late-closing attraction tells you nothing about the bus timetable.

When a car earns its cost

A car made sense for our Santasport apartment, repeated Village visits and independent aurora drives. It also meant winter roads, parking and watching the battery in severe cold. Central parking is mostly paid, while the airport and railway station have their own arrangements.

Our all-wheel-drive EV on winter tyres charged without incident. Arriving at about −22°C still made us anxious about range. Plan charging stops and allow extra range for cold weather. Follow current Finnish driving rules and, if hiring a car, the rental company’s instructions.

Five checks that prevent most surprises

  • Save the exact stop or pickup address, not only the attraction name.
  • Check the last return before paying for a timed activity.
  • Ask whether a tour transfer is included or an extra per person.
  • Confirm luggage, child-seat and accessibility needs directly.
  • Save a taxi option for a late arrival or missed last bus.

Last checked: 4 September 2026. Check fares and timetables for your travel dates.
